Chala Abate, aka Caalaa Hayiluu Abaataa in Afaan Oromo, is an exiled Oromo poet and writer who was imprisoned and tortured in his country of origin for writing poetry critical of the regime. Chala was a law student at Adama University before leaving his native country of Oromia, and he also worked with many different international organizations and local NGOs.
In Sweden, he studied SFI (Swedish for immigrants), SAS (Swedish as a second language in primary school) and SVA (Swedish as a second language in high school) in different parts of Sweden and at a distance. He also studied Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Malmö and Pedagogy in higher vocational education, focusing on a multilingual study guide with ICT competence.
He now lives safely in Sweden in a beautiful town called Hudiksvall. He is married and has two wonderful boys.
Despite living in a peaceful country, far from his homeland and as a poet and writer in exile, his thoughts remain with the oppressed Oromo nation in Oromia.
Chala is the author of three books in Afaan Oromo and a very active online human rights activist, reporter, blogger, and podcaster at https://www.buzzsprout.com/1411957/episodes/12480214 (DO- FUTURE GENERATIONS- PODCASTS).
Cha uses social media platforms and worked as a freelance journalist and reporter at https://www.facebook.com/profile .php?id=100063640325425 ( Miidiyaa Dhaddacha Oromoo).
He worked as a program producer at "Radiosydväst" and ran a '' Caffee Tumaa'' and the BB show to reach his people from 2014- 2016.
Chala was arrested and charged with his poetry, in which he criticized the regime and supported the OLF, which fought for Oromo's freedom.
He has exposed the atrocities and crimes committed by the Ethiopian regime against human rights defenders and other civilians across the country because of their differing political views.
